Kenya sanctions Opiyo

21 February 2005

Kenya defender Philip Opiyo has been dropped from the national team after failing a drugs test.

Opiyo, who plays for South African club Bush Bucks, is said to have pleaded guilty to using cannabis, following a test on 19 January after a match against Silver Stars.

Sylvester Ashioya, secretary-general of the Kenya Football Federation, said Opiyo's act has left them with no other choice but to drop him from the Harambee Stars for the time being.

"We can't allow our youth to be involved in the consumption of banned substances and have decided to remove him from the national team until he's cleared of any wrong-doing.

"We're waiting for a report from the South African federation and we'll then decide what kind of sanctions to impose on him,'' Ashioya said.

Before moving to South Africa, Opiyo played for local side Mathare United.
